Dansville ArtWorks is bringing another historic mural to downtown Dansville!

September 1, 2025

Dansville ArtWorks is pleased to announce the selection of the Sunrise Restaurant as the next location for a locally relevant historic exterior mural. Plans are to undertake the project beginning in June 2026 with the dedication on Saturday, August 8, 2026 in collaboration with Second Saturday Dansville, a program of the Dansville Chamber Events Committee.

Dansville ArtWorks Mural Committee evaluated suitable properties earlier this year. “We were very happy that there was a high level of interest in murals among downtown building and business owners,” states Mural Committee Chair Julee Acomb. Sunrise Restaurant edged out others for the quality of its north-facing wall, accessibility, and visibility. The restaurant is owned and managed by the Mitrousis family who are excited to be hosting the artwork. They have selected the theme of Granula, a forerunner of modern-day cereals and granola, which was manufactured in a building that previously existed on the Sunrise property. Granula has been credited to Dr. James Caleb Jackson and was served to guests at Our Home on the Hillside (our Castle on the Hill) beginning in 1863.

There will be multiple opportunities for community involvement with the mural project during summer 2026.

A Request For Proposals from experienced muralists and muralist teams has been issued and is available on ArtWorks’ website. The finalist will be shared with the public after the beginning of the new year.

Mural news can be found at dansvilleartworks.com/events-%26-programs and on ArtWorks’ Facebook and Instagram pages.

Funding for this project will come from community organizations, private donors and potentially grants. Those interested in contributing may do so via our website dansvilleartworks.com/support-our-work. Donations by check are welcome:   Dansville ArtWorks, PO Box 741, Dansville NY 14437, note: Mural Fund.
