GROUNDLINGS: ON AIR!

Shake on the Lake Organizers Announce The Release of Original Podcasts Created By Students From Perry Central School

Hello, Friends of Shake on the Lake both near and far!

I’m sure many of you are aware of The Groundlings On Stage Program, our series of grades 7-12 educational programing at Perry Central School each year. Most recently the students performed Improv@PCS in the spring of 2019 or The Silly Sisters who were the pre-show entertainment prior to our summer 2019 production of As You Like It.

Now that Winter has come (in so many ways), and after months of hard work, SOTL Associate Artist Josh Marcks, and The PCS Groundlings have a brand new project for your listening pleasure: not “Groundlings on Stage” mind you, but GROUNDLINGS: ON AIR!

That’s right! Just like our Puppet Fest pivoted to The Puppet Pod! and our A Christmas Carol stage play became a podcast play, the PCS Groundlings have pivoted to the creation of original podcasts. Each student engaged in instruction and discussion around the audio industry; creating concepts, writing scripts, and meeting up-and-coming podcast personality, Tyler Crosby, who you may remember from his performance in Lear’s Nightmare last fall.

Each episode of the Groundlings On-Air series is a pilot for a podcast that each Groundling plans to continue with in the new year, and cover a wide range of topics and tones including:

  • Remember the Ladies – a history podcast that takes the small amount of attention history books pay toward women and claps back with each episode a dedication and retrospective to a different female historical figure.
  • The Wright Thing to Do – an improv comedy podcast where “Judge” Alex Wright takes a look at customer interactions in the service industry -from the ridiculous to the downright absurd -and decides who’s in the “Wright” and who is in the wrong.
  • New York Sports – a one-stop-shop for your New York-based sports news in review. Host Caleb Carr brings a fast, no-nonsense approach to this podcast that will have you up-to-date before you’re out the door.
  • Every Second of Song – The subtle work that goes into composing a theatrical score can sometimes pass its listeners by without notice. Emma takes us through “Every Second of Song” highlighting motifs and explaining their meanings to open up a deeper world of understanding and appreciation that lies beneath the surface.

With everything that this year has thrown at them, we are amazed by The Groundlings’ work on each of their podcasts. And while they do not get to have a live performance to soak up the adulation of the audience, we truly hope you will give their work a listen via the following link.

We wish you all a Happy New Year, full of hope and excitement for what it will bring.

Cheers,
Josh and Pilar
