ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO) – an advanced youth orchestra comprised of grade 7-12 students from all over the Rochester region, directed by Casey Springstead – performs its fall concert on Sunday, November 12, at 2:00 pm. This concert will also be live streamed on Hochstein’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/hochsteinschool.

The first concert of the year focuses on musical concepts like ensemble, style, and expression, helping the newest orchestra members learn to play cohesively with returning musicians. Springstead says, “Our primary goal is to create a community of talented young musicians and we work diligently to foster a learning environment that nurtures and encourages students as they develop their musicianship.”

The concert includes the popular and dramatic Overture to Verdi’s opera La Forza del Destino; the beautiful Romance in Eb for strings by the 20th-century British composer Gerald Finzi; the well-loved Mars and Jupiter movements from Holst’s inspiring symphonic work The Planets; and Tchaikovsky’s thrilling fantasy for orchestra, Capriccio Italien. Tickets are $5 at the door.

The 81-member HYSO is a full orchestra for advanced strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion, directed by Casey Springstead. This year, there are students from 29 different schools, plus homeschooled students, from around the Rochester area and beyond who come together on Saturday mornings for an accelerated musical experience. The HYSO presents three concerts per year along with periodic international tours. Since 2000, the HYSO has performed in cities in Spain, Portugal, Austria, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, and Ireland. The orchestra will tour Italy in Spring 2024.

Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 North Plymouth Avenue, Rochester NY 14614; tickets at the door: $5 general admission. The concert will also be live streamed on Hochstein’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/hochsteinschool.

The Hochstein Orchestra and Chamber Music Programs are supported in part by the Louise Alfreda Hill Memorial Fund.

Hochstein programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. Hochstein programs are also made possible by the Monroe County Legislature; Adam Bello, Monroe County Executive.
